Since 1922, the AUA (American Unitarian Association), at its annual
May Meeting, and now the UUA, at its annual General Assemby (GA), has
invited a celebrated spokesperson to provide a lecture to the
attendees. Only 2 years have been missed...1945 due to WW II, and
1950, when the AUA celebrated its 125th anniversary. The Lecture
series is named for the Ware family and is funded by a 1920 bequest by
Harriet E. Ware of Milton, MA. Previous lecturers have included Martin
Luther King, Jr., Norman Lear, and poet Mary Oliver.
The 2008
Ware Lecture was provided by Van Jones, an activist working to combine
solutions to two of America's most pressing problems: social
inequality and environmental destruction. Jones co-founded the Ella
Baker Centter for Human Rights, which promotes positive alternatives to
violence and incarceration. He and the Center worked with Congress to
pass the Green Jobs Act of 2007, and with the City of Oakland, CA, to
create a "Green Jobs Corp." and the country's first-ever Green
Enterprise Zone. Jones is a 1993 Yale Law graduate.
Attendees at this year's Lecture who have attended multiple GA's in the past have called this the best Ware Lecture ever.
Join your fellow UUS'ers to watch the video of the Lecture and participate in a discussion afterward.
