Call Me Malcolm - This film explores the gender transition of a young seminary student (now ordained UCC minister Malcolm Himschoot) who describes his childhood like this: "I always thought of myself as one of the brothers. I have two brothers so that would have made me the third brother. But other people perceived me as a girl and I couldn't really correct them. It made me feel like I wasn't there." The folk hymn We Are Dancing Sarah's Circle includes the line, "We will all do our own naming," but our dominant cultural traditions don't really encourage us much in this regard. In what ways have each of us been called to rename or transform ourselves, possibly confusing and upsetting others, in order to be whole and live our lives with integrity? What might those experiences have in common with Malcolm's or any transgender person's experience?
Discussion to follow facilitated by David Weintraub of Equality Loudoun
