On the last Sunday in February the preschool group heard about af family's special tree in the book Our Tree Named Steve by Alan Zweibel. In this story a father is writing to his children who are away at their Grandma's. He writes about many memories of the tree before letting his children know that it fell during a storm and reminding them that the tree will always remain in their hearts and minds. The last page shows that “Steve” will also remain in their yard, as a brand new tree house. The preschool children talked about branches that had fallen in their neighborhoods during the last storm. They talked about seeing buds on trees near their homes. They also shared their excitement that many trees will flower soon and about looking forward to taking out their summer clothes and wearing short sleeves once again.

Teamwork! PDF Print E-mail

I had the good fortune to spend the last weekend in January at the UUS Women’s Retreat at Kim’s cabin in Bayse. On Saturday afternoon, five of us sprawled on the comfy furniture in front of her fire place and worked the Post crossword puzzle as a group. We had fun shouting out possible answers and playing off each other’s responses.  It was a little chaotic but definitely a team effort. It reminded me of the “What’s in a Name” conversations we’re having this month. Some people talk more than others but everyone speaks and shares their thoughts; these thoughts spur other thoughts and at least once in each session something is said that you hadn’t thought of before. It is humbling to facilitate these conversations and listen to all the ideas that are spoken, especially those ideas that come from our quieter members, and to watch other participants reflect or build on them. The dynamics are different in large groups and small, but the energy is just as intense.

Why Come to Church this Sunday? PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 31 January 2011
lindaweaver.jpg

Each week a “Why Come to Church this Sunday?” message goes out toeveryone who is on the UUS-Announce e-mail list (click on“Announcements” to the right of this column to subscribe). Themessage gives a summary of the service and the children's religiousexploration topics. In both the service and religious exploration, weengage with a wide variety of topics, providing opportunities tocelebrate, to mourn, to reflect and to question. However, there areso many other reasons to get out of bed and come to UnitarianUniversalists of Sterling on Sunday mornings. This is a time togather with a community of friends and neighbors. It is a time tomeet with others who share your beliefs, or perhaps more importantly, others who will challenge you to reconsider them from time to time.It is a time to meet with people who will encourage you as you striveto live out your beliefs, who will provide understanding when youfall short of your expectations, and who will then encourage you totry again. This is a time to connect with something greater thanyourself, whether it is love, the universe, or the divine. It is atime to join together in silence and in song. It is a time to jointogether in stillness and in action. Just as much as adults needthese things in our busy, sometimes isolated lives, children needthem also.

Happy New Year! Ihope everyone is recovered from the hectic Thanksgiving/Christmas season and issettling into a more normal winter routine. And I hope that routine includesUUS. We all are aware of the many ways you can stay busy at UUS, thecommittees, classes, and projects that are available; many of us find ourselvesat church during the week one, sometimes two or three nights. But sometimes, your life may be occupied with people and activities outside of church. Yourwork may have increased, a child may be ill, or maybe you’ve been very activeand are just burned out. Sometimes these changes happen in mid-year and youhave to decrease or stop your UUS activities. I want to assure you that UUS ishere for you. In fact, I think that UUS is especially here for you.

Conscience: Our Moral Compass PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 29 December 2010

lindaweaver.jpgConscience can be described as an internal moral compass that helps point us in the right direction. Just like a sense of direction, this moral compass can be developed through experience, study, and practice. When moving around the physical world, my sense of direction is not very reliable. I have not learned the signs. My partner, unlike me, grew up running around alone in the woods and became a navigator, able to determine turns within a minute or two at 300 mph and ensure that the plane and crew made it to their destination. Just as individuals must develop their sense of direction through knowledge and practice, individuals also develop their conscience.
